SSI - Supplemental Security Income

We represent clients at all levels of the administrative process to get the disabled the benefits they deserve.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) pays benefits to the disabled based on financial need. SSI is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes). SSI is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people who have little or no income; it provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.

Whether or not you can get SSI depends on your income and resources (the things you own). Resources that count in deciding whether you qualify for SSI include real estate, bank accounts, cash, stocks, and bonds. You may be able to get SSI if your resources are worth no more than $2,000. A couple may be able to get SSI if they have resources worth no more than $3,000.

SSI pays a fixed amount of money to all persons who qualify irregardless of the amount they “paid into the system.” Therefore, it is possible for somebody who has done little or no work to qualify for SSI. If you are initially turned down for benefits and later approved, it is often possible to obtain a back award of benefits, In order to receive benefits, you must have a medical condition that meets Social Security's definition of disability. In general, monthly cash benefits are paid to people who are unable to work for a year or more because of a disability. Unfortunately, obtaining these benefits is not always easy and the use of an attorney is often helpful in obtaining benefits, especially for those who have already been denied by Social Security.

You should apply for disability benefits as soon as you become disabled. It is very likely that you will be turned down on your initial application. Most people are. However, we are able to successfully represent our clients in a multi-level administrative process that many times reverses the initial denial and provides monthly cash benefits as well as the potential for a sizeable back award.

If your attorney is successful in representing your claim, he is paid a percentage of the back award of benefits as well as the costs associated with representing you. However, there is no fee unless you win. Please contact us to find out if we can help with your case.
